Formal and Informal garden
The formal garden is layed out from the terrace. The formal garden includes a court yard, a small white garden and a knot garden, which is inspired by the famous knot garden designed by Rosemary Verey at Barnsley House in the Cotswolds (UK). Other parts of the garden are more informal and based on the typical English cottage garden. Munkhaven Cottage Gardens was designed and created by the owners themselves. Three years were needed to construct the garden structure and layout, taking into account the sight lines and proportions. This results in stunning views and a surprising discovery of the garden.
Sunken Garden
The Sunken Garden was created in the fall of 2016 on the original level of the surrounding fields. The level of the Sunken Garden is below street level. This street was a former inner dike for protection against sea-influences. For this Sunken Garden a Sunny border was designed with a wide range of prairie plants. In total, more than 1200 plants were used and it became an interpretation of the traditional prairie garden. The plants were chosen in such a way that flowers, color and structure are present throughout the year.
Vegetable garden
The vegetable garden combines wild flowers and vegetables. Every year a wildflower meadow with annual flowers is combined with beans growing along wood structures giving a great architectural composition. There is also an increased vegetable bed, which makes growing vegetables more ergonomic. The English greenhouse, designed in cooperation with 'The National Trust' gives shelter to patio plants surviving the winter and tomatoes take over during spring and summer.
Hydrangea Garden
The Hydrangeagarden was designed and created together with the Sunken Garden in the fall of 2016. Here hydrangeas play a leading role and are combined with old apple, pear, medlar, quince apple and chestnut trees. In this low maintenance shady garden you can admire 17 different types of Hydrangeas.
Orchard and Park Garden
The orchard contains chestnut, pear and apple trees in combination with a wildflower meadow of perennials, which is hayed once a year. Here you can enjoy the tranquillity of country life. In the extension of the orchard lies a park garden giving children the opportunity to play football, run around or play kite during windy days in the polder landscape. This all is overlooked by Nike, the goddess of victory.
